On reading

written by tshirtman, on 1/11/14 1:33 AM.

When i was young, reading was probably one of my most time-consuming activity, i read hundreds of books, i had always one around, for most of these years, i didn’t have a tv, neither a computer, let alone the internet. So i read a lot, and i’m happy i did, i think it helped with my ability to discuss ideas, to assess opinions, and to write better sentences. However, in the last, err, decade? I’ve been devoting most of my time to computers, what i read was mostly technical, and since the internet came to me, i slowly took habit of reading small articles, small bits of information, and lost the habit of reading things that are longer than a few “pages”. While i believe there is nothing inherently wrong with these information, they can be interesting, and a good piece of information doesn’t need a whole book around it to make it legitimate, losing the habit, or even the ability to give enough focus to the longer text pieces that deserve it, there is a good chance a lot of very interesting information will become out of reach, and that the useful skills associated to their consumption will slowly become blunt.

Now, reading require time, and focus, and having books around. For the time, it’s incredible what one can do by dedicating some time, no matter how small, on a daily basis to an activity, so it’s a matter of organization, of time management. Focus is exactly the problem i want to fix, as i’m unsatisfied by my current ability to focus a long time on the same activity, so it’ll be beneficial. For books, i went full ebook, everything i read is on my nexus 7, some from the kindle app, some from google books, some from pdfs or epubs saved directly.

I’m currently using my commute time to read, around 2 hours a day, sometime it’s articles i saved before hand, but the target is to read mostly books, some classics, some science, some recommendations i gather from other readings.

I’m not able to “fast-read” yet, i sometime try to enumerate things (like “abcabcabc” or “123123123″) to avoid vocalizing the text in my head and unlock the speed boost, but i’m not really successful yet, and while it’s useful for some things, i’m not sure it’s the best way to read literature.

Anyway, that’s all for today, see you tomorrow!
